Fee Schedule for Certified Farmers’ Markets & Certified Producers
The Certified Farmers Market program was created in 1977 and enables California Agricultural Producers to directly market their agricultural products to consumers. In Orange County, Certified Farmers Markets provide local consumers a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey, eggs, plants and cut flowers.

The Certified Farmers Market is a place where California farmers can sell what they grow directly to consumers. It gives growers and customers a chance to interact with each other and provides the public with convenient access to fresh high-quality California-grown produce. Farmers benefit by having another outlet to market their commodities, avoiding the middle man expenses associated with a commercial preparation of products, and being able to sell specialty products more easily. Certified Farmers Markets are also enjoyable community events that bring in a variety of other small businesses, such as jewelry and craft vendors, prepared food sellers, and musicians.
Orange County certified producers range from backyard growers to large scale farmers. We certify growers of fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey, eggs, nursery stock, and cut flowers. During a certification inspection, an agricultural inspector visits the farmer’s growing grounds, taking note of what is being grown and its condition. With the information collected, our office issues Certified Producer’s Certificates detailing what commodities the inspector has seen growing and at what quantity, the approximate expected yield, and the expected harvest season.
During a Certified Farmers Market inspection, our principal objective is to verify that each vendor has been certified as growing each agricultural product brought to market. The Certified Producer’s Certificate is the most important regulatory tool we have at the market, especially since we have growers from all over California selling at our local farmer's markets. We check the products being sold, taking into account quality, season, and growing location to ensure that the commodities offered for sale were indeed grown by the producer. We also verify organic produce by examining organic registration documents issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
