Internationally, the metric system is applied to weights and measures. Weights for baggage, fruits and vegetables, and even eggs (sold by the kilo, not by the dozen) are measured in kilograms. Distances are measured in kilometers. Gas is sold by the liter (slightly more than a quart), not by the gallon. Land areas are measured in hectares. A kilo is approximately 2.2 pounds; a meter is slightly longer than a yard; a liter is slightly more than a quart.
